Custom fields and product attributes serve different purposes: custom fields add information to products by category, while product attributes create variants of the same product.

Understanding the Difference

Custom Fields: Category-wide fields that appear for all products assigned to specific categories

Product Attributes: Variant-specific options like color, size, or style that create different versions of the same product

Example: For a car dealership, "Engine Type" would be a custom field (applies to all vehicles), while "Color" would be a product attribute (creates red, blue, green variants of the same car model).
Custom Fields

Custom fields extend the basic product form with category-specific information that applies to all products within that category.

Setting Up Custom Fields
Create Custom Fields:
  1. Navigate to Settings
  2. Go to the second tab
  3. Tap Custom Fields
  4. Create fields and assign them to specific categories
  5. Set field properties (title, category, required status)
How Custom Fields Work

Once created, custom fields automatically appear when:

  • Creating new products in the assigned category
  • Editing existing products in that category
  • Viewing product details
Use Cases for Custom Fields:
  • Electronics: Brand, Model, Warranty Period
  • Clothing: Material, Care Instructions, Season
  • Food: Expiration Date, Allergens, Nutrition Info
Product Attributes

Product attributes create selectable variants of the same base product, each with its own stock levels, pricing, and UPC codes.

Setting Up Product Attributes
Create Product Variants:
  1. Edit the product you want to add variants to
  2. Navigate to the Variants tab
  3. Tap the gear icon (bottom left) to manage attributes
  4. Add attributes like Color, Size, Style
  5. Define options for each attribute (Red, Blue, Green for Color)

Changes to variant attributes are saved automatically - no need to manually save.
